The need for teams to work effectively across academic medicine has never been greater than it is right now. Differing work styles among team members is common, but when a lack of understanding exists about how each member’s work can affect the team’s collective results, everyone’s performance suffers. As a leader, how can you encourage your team to embrace greater interdependence: the ability of team members to develop a systems perspective, to understand how their respective work processes intersect, and to be responsive to each other’s changing needs and circumstances?

Relational Coordination (RC) represents a body of research demonstrating that teams or organizations who work interdependently achieve higher quality, work more efficiently, better satisfy their customers/patients, and enjoy greater satisfaction. Through the application of these strategies, teams who appear to be competing for organizational resources can be realigned to recognize shared goals, shared knowledge, and mutual respect and, in turn, achieve better performance and satisfaction.
