31st Annual Conference Spanning the Continuum of Care: Innovations in Geriatric Health Practice

 


Program Overview

Course Description: 

This conference provides geriatric health professionals throughout the continuum of care with clinical and practical topics relevant to health practice with older adults. These topics were selected because they represent areas of need as identified by participants and faculty who provide health care to older adults. Some topics represent increasing clinical concerns in the geriatric population. Other topics represent areas that have important policy and cost implications for health care providers and ultimately affect the way services are provided to older patients.

This conference is designed to provide updates to health care providers from all disciplines including physicians, physician assistants, medical directors, social workers, nurses, nurse practitioners, occupational therapists, physical therapists, nursing home administrators, dental professionals, audiologists, chiropractors, podiatrists, recreational therapists, health care students, faculty and any other professionals interested in the field of aging.

Learning Objectives:

At the conclusion of the activity, participants should be able to:

1. List the most common causes of vision loss in older adults and the physical and emotional effects of this loss

2. Explain two Veterans Health Affairs workforce development programs and how they increase geriatric knowledge and skills of primary care providers and staff

3. Summarize the pathobiology of Alzheimer's Disease and how this knowledge has led to novel treatment targets

4. Identify the goals of interdisciplinary palliative care

5. Identify characteristics of deaf/hard of hearing older adults and deaf older adult sign language users

6. Identify the major considerations regarding societal aging and describe the differences across developed countries in their adaption to aging
