The US-Japan Annual Joint Panel Conference on Cholera and Other Bacterial Enteric Infections, now in its 53rd year, is an international forum for scientific exchange and collaboration. This meeting has been held almost every year since 1965, hosted alternatively by the Japanese and U.S. Panels. Many of the most significant advances in field have been presented first at US-Japan conferences.

In 2011 the Joint Panels met for the first time outside their home countries, in Kolkata, India; hosted by the National Institute for Cholera and Enteric Diseases. In 2013 the conference was held in Dhaka; hosted by the International Centre for Diarrhoeal Disease Research, Bangladesh. In 2017 the conference was held in Seoul, Korea; hosted by the International Vaccine Institute. In 2018, the conference will be hosted by the Faculty of Science, Prince of Songkla University.

The 52nd Conference:

This website is to provide information to scientists interested in the conference, to track registrations, compile attendee lists, and to receive abstracts from registrants. Japanese scientists submitting abstracts for review by the Japanese Panel follow a separate track under instructions from the Japanese Cholera Panel Office.

All other qualified scientists (U.S. and non-U.S.) are invited to submit abstracts reporting new research findings in the fields of cholera, Vibrio parahaemolyticus, other vibrioses, Salmonella, Shigella, pathogenic Escherichia coli, Campylobacter, Clostridium difficile, Helicobacter, and other enteropathogenic bacteria. Studies ranging from epidemiology to the molecular mechanisms of pathogenesis and immunity are always welcomed. Basic and translational research studies on enteric infections, food- and water-borne disease, enteric vaccines, therapeutics, diagnostics, microbiome, probiotics, other interventions, and other topics relevant to the broad field are all encouraged.

Abstracts submitted to this site must be no more than 1 page; and include abstract title, author(s), institutions, and their countries. Single-spaced text is preferred. Figures, tables etc. may be included within the one-page limit. Compliant abstracts will be reviewed by the U.S. Panel for scientific merit, significance to the goals of the program, and interest to the audience. The corresponding authors of abstracts identified as best suited to oral presentation will be asked to submit an extended abstract (up to 5 pages) for the benefit of conference attendees for whom English is not the primary language. Abstracts not selected for oral presentation will be evaluated for poster presentation, and the corresponding author will be notified. The Conference Program will include oral and poster scientific presentations.

The Local Organizing Committee Hosts and Japanese Panel Hosts of the 52nd US-Japan also offer field studies related to vibrios and other enteric infections, and discussions on new opportunities and recommended approaches for successful research collaborations in Thailand and elsewhere in the Asia-Pacific region. These optional field studies arranged by the Thai hosts and Japanese Panel carry an additional charge of 5000 baht, and include an off-site investigation involving travel departing after the scientific sessions on February 23rd, an overnight stay, and returning late afternoon on February 24th. This website will be updated as details become available.
