The 2012 Conference on Applied Learning in Higher Education is expanding the program presentation options to provide additional opportunities for presenters and participants. Scholars and practitioners of applied learning are invited to submit proposals for symposia, individual faculty/professional sessions, student and mentor sessions, individual student sessions, and poster sessions. All presenters are expected to register for the conference.
The definitions for each presentation category are as follows:
¨Symposium: A 50-minute presentation given by a faculty or professional team on one particular theme of Applied Learning. Presentations should provide interactive materials for the audience, as well as an assessment of the project or learning application. If more than one group is sharing on a related topic, please submit one abstract for each team. Only five (5) symposiums will be designated.
¨ Individual Faculty/Professional session: Two 20-minute presentations are given during a 50-minute session. Presenters should provide an overall summary of a particular aspect of Applied Learning as well as outcome assessments of the project or learning application.
¨ Student and Mentor session: These sessions are new to the CALHE and will be 50-minutes in length. The goal of this session is twofold. First, this session is to provide students the opportunity to present their work from a particular area of Applied Learning in an academic setting. Second, the presentation should involve the faculty or professional mentor for this project. They will describe the process involved in creating this project with the student. This could involve the relationship of the project to the educational program, assisting in access to organizations, funding development or any roadblocks occurring along the way.
¨ Student session: These presentations are new to the CALHE. The goal of these sessions is to provide students with the opportunity to present their work in an academic setting. There will be two 20-minute presentations given during each 50-minute session. The student or student team should provide an overall summary of this particular aspect of Applied Learning as well as outcome assessments of the project or learning application.
¨ Poster session: This is a visual display of research provided by faculty, professionals, or students and allows presenters the opportunity to interact with the audience in an informal environment. Easels will be provided along with limited access to plug in for electronic displays (please request in advance). The audience will ‘walk through’ this session and the presenter(s) is expected to maintain close proximity to the station to answer questions from the audience.
Topics may focus on assessment and/or evaluation of the quality of applied learning, the development or administration of applied learning programs, representing and valuing applied learning for promotion and tenure processes or related topics. Presentations that are data- or theory-driven are preferred. Each proposal should be sent as a Word attachment, and include the following:
- The area(s) of applied learning your proposal addresses (co-curricular programming, internships and practica, service-learning, study abroad, and undergraduate research or other/please specify)
- Preferred presentation format (symposium, individual faculty/professional, student and mentor, student only, or poster)
- Title
- Author(s) names, institution(s), and contact information (including e-mail addresses)
- Summary of no more than 250 words and should include learning objective for audience (graphs, tables and photographs need not be included)
E-mail proposals as a Word attachment by October 15th to:
appliedlearning@missouriwestern.edu
All proposals received by the October 15th deadline will be reviewed and considered for the program with notification of acceptance by e-mail no later than November 15, 2011. The Program Committee reserves the right to accept proposals for symposia and individual presentations as posters contingent on space limitations.
