Translating Brain Research into Effective Language and Literacy Instruction

This course examines how language is represented in the brain as well as the neurolinguistic aspects of language development. By understanding the workings of the human brain in relation to language use, international school teachers will be better able to enhance their instructional effectiveness in the classroom. This course explores “the bilingual brain”, i.e. how two or more languages are organized and interact within a bilingual individual, and how the multiple language systems are employed in language comprehension and production. This course will also examine (1) Aspects of language acquisition programmed into the human brain vs. those aspects which are based on experience, and (2) the effect of age on language learning.

Who will benefit: Language teachers, elementary and secondary classroom teachers

OPTION III

Meeting the Social and Emotional Needs of International Students

Dr. Pamela Ward

This institute will focus on (1) identification of various personality types, (2) providing a foundation for mobile students and those who attend school with them, (3) managing specific types of behaviors, (4) recognizing signs of pathologies that require psychological and/or medical attention, and (5) effective strategies for dealing with parents, administrators and specialists.
