Success Story from Last Year's Volunteer Event: Dei Tafari - 17 year-old recent graduate of Benjamin Banneker High School & freshman at The University of West Georgia
Dei Tafari, Student
AAP: How did you get involved with AAP?
Dei: AAP hosted a mock-networking and service project event back in November that I attended along with about 60 other high school students in the Next Generation Men program. The event was great because I was able to meet so many AAP members and professionals from different companies.
AAP: What was the most impactful takeaway from the event?
Dei: At the event I met Ann Mitchell, AAP Vice-Chair & AVP at Nationwide Insurance. I told her about my fashion company and asked for advice to take it to the next level. She gave me several great tips, but said if I was really serious, to draft a proposal and gave me her card to follow-up regarding a mentoring opportunity.
AAP: So did you follow through?
Dei: I did, and over the past few months I have learned a great deal about sales strategy and marketing. Ms. Ann emphasized the importance of fine-tuning my elevator pitch. It’s also been a great opportunity to learn about business problem solving and ask questions about college and future career options.
AAP: We understand that the mentorship has been of mutual benefit? What were you able to share?
Dei: I shared information about social media and how today’s teens use Instagram and other platforms to communicate.
AAP: Please tell us about your entrepreneurship and where we can go for more information.
Dei: Sure. I founded Simply Great Clothing with $200 and exceeded $10,000 in revenue in just over a year. During that year, I also grew 12,000 followers on Instagram. As I prepare to start college next month, I’ve transitioned to my next company, Dei Tafari Consulting|Marketing Expert. Brand Management. This will allow me to focus on leveraging my social media and website expertise. It will also be flexible with college courses taking the priority. Please visit my website here.
