Acid Fracturing - September 25-27, 2017 - Calgary, AB


This course emphasizes the multi-disciplinary nature of Acid Fracturing, covering the differences between Propped Fracturing and Acid Fracturing including integrated with Acid Chemistry, Etched Conductivity, Acid Reaction kinetics, wormholing fluid loss, acidizing materials and treatment execution/QC. There is some emphasis on StimPlan software for acid fracturing design.

  • Gain general knowledge in basic theory and application of acid fracturing.
  • How to determine the volume of rock removal and acid stoichiometry.
  • Develop step-by-step procedure for estimating acid fracturing variables and developing preliminary treatment design goals and pump schedule designs.
  • How to determine and measure acid reaction and fluid loss/wormholing parameters.
  • How to evaluate/select appropriate acid fracturing materials.
  • How to perform the critical field QC for good acid fracturing results.
  • Gain proficiency in the use of StimPlan.

The attendees of this school should have attended NSI’s 5-day Propped Hydraulic Fracture School or an equivalent school. This Acid Fracturing School assumes that the attendee is well versed in the principles of rock stresses, fracture geometry modeling, evaluating fracture performance and treatment scheduling of hydraulic fracturing.

Course Outline

The following topics are covered in the Acid Fracturing course:

  • Carbonate Acid Chemistry: How to determine the volume of rock and conductivity that can be achieved with an acid fracturing treatment.
  • Acid Etched Conductivity (kwf): What acid conductivity models are available, what their limitations are and how to use them.
  • Acid Reaction Rates: What are the major variables that control acid fracture reaction rates including mass transfer, convection, activation energy and reaction order? Where do these parameters come from, what they mean and how are they measured.
  • Acid Fracturing Fluid Loss: What is “Pore Volume to Breakthrough”, what effect does it have on wormhole geometry and how is it measured.
  • Materials: What are the important properties for acid fracturing materials and how should these properties be weighted and evaluated for specific applications?
  • Treatment Execution and Quality Control: What are the major parameters that should be measured in the field to evaluate the proper execution of an acid fracturing treatment? How the well should be prepared for the treatment.
