ADC 2018 Annual Meeting

Elevate! That is the theme of this year’s annual meeting, and for good reason. Elevate your knowledge base, elevate your case preparation, elevate your practice, elevate your professional relationships and elevate your personal and professional happiness!

Staying current and competitive in your practice is the key to your future or continued success. This meeting offers a comprehensive program with 8.25 hours of CLE credit on interesting topics of significance to your practice. Do not miss out and be sure to attend this year’s meeting at the historic Westin St. Francis on Union Square in San Francisco.

The meeting starts with a bang (of the gavel!). The presiding judges of San Francisco, Alameda and Contra Costa Counties will give a State of the Courts address that will let ADC members know what is going on with funding, filings and trial dates in the court system. Tired of reading advance sheets? Maybe you have been lax about even doing that! Don’t worry – we have compressed key civil opinions from the appellate court by topical area in the popular Year in Review. The work is all done for you. Just listen and catch up!

Experts – we all must deal with experts and there are new things you need to know. For years, courts have allowed experts to rely on hearsay from records and other sources in forming their opinions. Under Sanchez, it is a whole new ball game. Come learn how to work around Sanchez to avoid disaster in your case and impose disaster on your opponent’s case! Of course, no current and useful seminar would be complete without a program on the Reptile theory. There are experienced judges and attorneys who have never heard of the theory, and you do not want to be one of them. Come learn the latest from national experts on how to understand and combat an opponent who engages in Reptile tactics from the beginning of the case through trial so you can avoid a monstrous verdict. You could be getting “reptiled” and not even know it!

We all need some fun in the course of learning about trial tactics and technology, right? Maybe even a blast from the past? This year’s meeting features a presentation on the trial of Michael Skidmore v. Led Zeppelin, et al., the highly publicized copyright infringement case involving the Led Zeppelin song “Stairway to Heaven.” Defense counsel will discuss how testimony from Jimmy Page and Robert Plant together with trial technology and a blistering cross-examination of the plaintiff’s witnesses carried the day for the rock icons.

Motivate yourself, motivate your firm and be the best you can be. Anne Brafford, lawyer, organizational psychologist, consultant and author of The Path to Lawyer Well-Being: Practice Recommendations for Positive Change will provide a program on lawyer thriving, positive leadership, resilience, work engagement, meaningful work, motivation and lawyer retention. Our keynote speaker this year is Dan Ventrelle, Executive Vice President & General Counsel of the Oakland Raiders. Despite being born in Chicago, the home of the Bears, Dan was captivated by the Oakland Raiders from an early age. He cold called the Raiders before graduating from law school and found himself in the top legal position for the team a few years later. Dan will talk about his experience in business and legal operations for an NFL franchise.

In addition to the above offerings, there will be world class seminars covering employment law, mediation, writ petitions, construction and elimination of bias. Don’t miss out! I look forward to seeing you at the St. Francis!
