The Eastern Pennsylvania Branch of the American Society for Microbiology will sponsor the 46th Annual Symposium at Thomas Jefferson University- Alumni Hall. This intermediate to advanced level program will provide updates on the new 2016 IDSA guidelines for antimicrobial stewardship programs (ASP) and the application of new diagnostic tests. The program will also include case presentations on the specific impact of rapid tests on ASP. Additional topics will include C. difficile infection and testing, pathogen-directed agents under development, interactive predictive antibiograms, and an update of chronic hepatitis C and resistance detection. Objectives: At the conclusion of this symposium, participants will be able to1) Explain the new updates in the 2016 IDSA guidelines from antimicrobial stewardship (ASP) and the clinical application of rapid diagnostic tests to ASP.2) Describe the impact of rapid molecular methods in support of ASP as illustrated in case presentations.3) Discuss the use of rapid and molecular methods for the detectin of clinically relevant C. difficile infections.4) Review new antimicrobial agents under development and thier use as pathogen-directed agents.5) Explain the utility of interactive predictive antibiograms for choice of empiric therapy.6) Review the updated therapies for management of chronic hepatitis C infection, and discuss genotyping and the detection of viral resistance.
