Anxiety and the Gift of the Imagination


Morning Session:

In the morning we will cover the pros and cons of providing a formal diagnosis for children, what's happening with diagnoses for children, the research on anxiety disorders in childhood. 

Why is it important to focus on anxiety in children at this time to diagnose or not to diagnose prevalence of mental disorders in children difference between symptoms and disorders when is professional help needed difference between stress and anxiety how to be successful with cognitive behaioural approaches with kids

We will also cover the difference between​ normal anxieties and clinical states and how to determine if the problem is serious enough to warrant professional intervention.

Participants will learn:

  • about the difference between stress and anxiety and the difference between fear and anxiety.
  • about what anxieties are normal in childhood.

We will discuss the current state of using cognitive behavioural approaches with children and how CBT differs for adults and children.

Participants will learn:

  • about the difference between child thinking and adult thinking and do an exercise and learn how to speak more effectively with children.
  • the difference between child and adult anxiety

Afternoon session:

We will talk about the role of the imagination and anxiety, discuss what we know about the imagination.

Participants will learn:

  • about Dr Alter's work using the imagination as a tool when helping children with their anxieties
  • you will hear a sample session with Dr. Alter and a child suffering from anxieties. 
  • tips on how to help children with too much anxiety and how to help the parent(s) of these children.
