ASSBI & Shine Lawyers Workshop for Health Providers: NDIS eligibility, funding and appeals

The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is a new system of disability support that commenced its roll out across Australia in July 2016. If implemented successfully, it will substantially improve the wellbeing of people with disability by encouraging and assisting them to maximise their independence. With its introduction into different states, region by region over a period of time, and varying approaches to eligibility and funding, there are a great number of questions that exist at this stage of implementation.

The Australasian Society for the Study of Brain Impairment (ASSBI) and Shine Lawyers have developed a dedicated workshop series to equip health providers and other professionals with:

  • A greater understanding of the NDIS
  • Case studies: NDIS successes and areas for improvement
  • Insight into level of support that can be provided to clients and patients, including how to request assistance / funding
  • Opportunity to discuss any areas of uncertainty.

Each workshop will comprise of two segments; one delivered by an ASSBI Clinician, the other presented by a legal expert from Shine Lawyers. The workshop will include afternoon tea.

Clinician Considerations
In this session the Clinician will provide delegates with an understanding of how to get involved within the NDIS scheme and how to become an approved provider.  It will provide guidance in terms of planning the NDIS supports and the written agreements required in terms of delivering on those supports.

Legal Considerations
NDIS Participants have a fundamental right to have their needs fairly assessed and reviewed. This session will talk through eligibility criteria, an individual’s rights of review and when a decision becomes reviewable both internally and through a tribunal.  It will look at the interaction between a participant’s rights under the NDIS and other rights and obligations that may arise if a participant is also considering alternate schemes or legal action.  The session will further provide advice on what steps are required to be taken and what assistance may be available at key stages of a participant’s journey through the NDIS scheme to ensure participants are maximising all avenues to seek financial assistance and support.
