When you work with people approaching death’s door, you encounter both the distress and fear surrounding death. By grounding yourself first, through the skills of mindfulness practice, you will develop everyday approaches that develop “mindful presence” that deepen your capacity to be with the suffering, both yours and others. Through “mindful listening” practices, you will experience how the neural pathways wire you either to fatigue and burnout or open you to the skills of compassion. Finally by contemplating your own relationship with death, you face the complex issues surrounding end-of-life care, including hastening death.
