For the very first time, the Training Institute and the Academy of Forensic Nursing are offering this unique opportunity to learn from the leading experts and practitioners in the field of non-fatal strangulation. This course is for prosecutors and professionals wanting to testify and/or improve their ability to testify in court about non-fatal strangulation – from the first response to sentencing, from dynamics to the medical aspects, from “tiny little red spots” to “petechiae,” from preparation to conviction, and much more! It will be a full day of information, interaction, practice, discussion, learning and networking. Attendees and faculty will leave exhausted and energized all at the same time.

This course consists of 1 full day of training from 8:00AM-5:00PM. To receive full credit, you must attend the entire course.

COURSE DESCRIPTION:
Prosecuting domestic violence and sexual assault cases are some of the most difficult cases to prove. Strangulation cases, especially with the lack of visible injury, are even more challenging. Because most strangulation victims do not have visible external injuries, non-fatal strangulation cases are frequently minimized and misunderstood by all professionals. Seeing is believing. Jurors may expect to see visible external injuries to believe a victim was strangled or suffocated. It is important to develop and utilize medical experts in the prosecution of non-fatal strangulation cases in order to explain the lack of injuries, the subtle signs and symptoms of strangulation, the vulnerability of the neck, loss of consciousness, delayed consequences and life -threatening injuries.
