This course is intended for drug chemists beginning their career at a local, state, or federal crime laboratory. The course will cover the history and analysis of various controlled substances commonly seen in the laboratory. Various analytical techniques and instrumentation will be discussed such as color tests, GCMS, FTIR, extraction methods, and more. Additional topics include ethics in forensic science, courtroom testimony, accreditation, and roundtable discussion. Attendees are asked to prepare a brief power point on an interesting case encountered in their laboratory. There will be a minimum of 4 hours of laboratory instruction and/or hands-on activities applying the analytical techniques learned in lecture.
