The American Heart Association strongly promotes knowledge and proficiency in BLS and has developed instructional materials for this purpose. Use of these materials in an educational course does not represent course sponsorship by the American Heart Association. Any fees charged for such a course, except for a portion of fees needed for AHA course material, do not represent income to the association. • Certification cards for BLS providers are valid for two years. It is the cardholder’s responsibility to contact a training center or institution to arrange for a renewal course and written exam. • BLS provider and renewal courses are limited to the first 18 qualified pre-paid registrants. All disclosures and nondisclosures are made known to the audience. REGISTRATION AND FEES Registration deadline for all courses is two weeks prior to the first day of each course. Registrations will not be accepted until the application is complete with all required prerequisites. Complete applications will be processed in the order they are received. CANCELLATION POLICY No refunds will be made for cancellations however, a prepaid registrant may send a qualified substitute. If this applies, prior notification is required before the course begins. In the event of an emergency, a registrant may transfer enrollment to the next available course. One transfer is allowed after which registration fee will be forfeited. The Division of Continuing Health Professional Education reserves the right to cancel the program if sufficient pre-registrations are not received. In case of cancellation, all registrants will be notified and registration fees will be refunded. The cost of the textbook will also be assessed if not returned or not returned in new condition. Goals:The BLS for Healthcare Providers course is to train participants to save lives of victims in cardiac arrest through high-quality cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). • This course trains participants to promptly recognize cardiac arrest, give highquality chest compressions, deliver appropriate ventilations, and provide early use of an automated external defibrillator (AED), as part of a team and individually; • Instruction on how to relieve choking; and • The course includes adult, child and infant rescue techniques. Learning Objectives: At the end of the BLS-HCP Course, students will be able to: • Initiate the Chain of Survival by recognition of cardiac arrest within 10 seconds and overcoming barriers to initiating CPR; • Perform prompt, high-quality CPR with the C-A-B sequence for the adult/ child/infant; • Initiate early use of an AED (adult/child/infant); • Provide appropriate breaths with minimal interruptions in compressions (adult/ child/infant); and • Provide 2-rescuer CPR (adult/infant).
The AHA developed the BLS Provider Course for “currently active” healthcare providers (e.g., medical, nursing, emergency medical or allied health personnel) whose daily occupation or volunteer activities demand proficiency in the knowledge and skills of BLS. Others may be admitted into the course by discretion of the Course Director.
