BDD is a set of practices in which an application is specified and developed by describing its behavior from an external perspective. We will learn how business analysts, testers and programmers can collaborate more effectively to create a shared understanding of product specifications that leads to better planning, fewer missed requirements, and fewer defects by minimizing ambiguity and rework. Learn how to express these requirements in a manner that provides long-term documentation of the system as intended and “as currently built.” Learn how to automate verification that this documentation remains correct with every build of the system. We will explore techniques to deliberately discover the things that the system should and explicitly should not do. We will practice techniques to identify “unknown unknowns” in our system requirements so that we may deal with them early, even before development begins. The business rules and examples gleaned from the conversations among “the three amigos” are converted into acceptance criteria and acceptance scenarios automated as validation tests. Within the context of BDD these examples are often expressed as human-readable executable specifications. When these examples are expressed well, they provide durable documentation of the system behavior for the long term. The results of these tests provide confidence to stakeholders and the team that that the desired business capabilities are being achieved. In this workshop, we will expose participants to Cucumber, a popular BDD collaboration tool that lets us manage our specifications and automated tests. The same techniques can be used with many other BDD frameworks.
