Canada is a vast land with many different physical landscapes. Spring boarding from this understanding, we are going to collaboratively learn about the seven main cultural groups of Canada’s Aboriginal Peoples (Woodland Algonquians, Woodland Iroquois, Subarctic, Plains, Plateau, Arctic and Northwest Coast) through a variety of learning activities. Each class will focus on one of the people groups; students will explore through literature, videos (Raven Tales), written activities, crafts and games. It is beneficial to refer to The Kids Book of Aboriginal Peoples in Canada.
As the resources in each area vary, students will gain an understanding of the uniqueness of these people groups because they lived in different homes, had different modes of transportation, made their own clothes and prepared a variety of foods.
There will be two classes, a primary class geared towards K-grade 3 and grades 3-6. The older class will have homework as they will be completing a novel study on The Sign of the Beaver. A final class for the older students will be arranged for a “movie party” to view The Sign of the Beaver and compare the novel/movie. Students participating in the novel study will require a copy of the novel.
