Are Climate Sceptics Wrong – or Right?
Is planet Earth warming? Are human influences an important contributor to warming? Are we seeing a regime of fear for sceptical climate scientists? Are the views of mainstream climate scientists driven primarily by the desire for financial gain? Is it true that more CO² and additional warming will be beneficial?
Six big questions the answers to which could take a life time of study and analysis but whose terrain – at least its salient points – might just be covered over another compelling British-Swiss Chamber of Commerce Lunch, the last of 2012.
Most non-scientists would agree that the climate change debate is not only bewildering – there is strong evidence that the public has a poor understanding of the science of global warming – but that there is a large dose of politics and economics mixed into the cocktail too. Dr. Fred Singer is well-placed to bring clarity and lucidity to a complex story.
Our guest speaker is a scientist, and internationally known as a climate-change sceptic. He is Professor Emeritus at the University of Virginia and Director of the Science & Environmental Policy Project. His specialty is atmospheric and space physics. An expert in remote sensing and satellites, he served as the founding director of the U.S. Weather Satellite Service and, more recently, as Vice Chair of the U.S. National Advisory Committee on Oceans & Atmosphere. He is a Senior Fellow of the Heartland Institute and the Independent Institute in the U.S.A. Dr. Singer co-authored the New York Times best-seller “Unstoppable Global Warming: Every 1500 years.” In 2007, he founded and has chaired the NIPCC (Non-governmental International Panel on Climate Change), which has released several scientific reports [See www.nipccreport.org].
