Southern California JSHS
University of California, Irvine

Saturday, January 18, 2020

Welcome to the Southern California Junior Science and Humanities Symposia (JSHS) Program, hosted by the University of California, Irvine.  The 2020 Southern California Regional Symposia
will be held Saturday, January 18, 2020, at the
Arnold and Mabel Beckman Center of the National Academies of Sciences and Engineering, Irvine, California.

JSHS is designed to challenge, engage, and publicly recognize students (Grades 9-12) conducting research in the sciences, technology, engineering, or mathematics (STEM). Individual students compete for scholarships and recognition by presenting the results of their original research efforts before a panel of judges and an audience of their peers. Opportunities for career exploration, research lab visits, peer discussions, and networking are planned. By participating in regional and national symposia, students may:

  • Participate in a forum honoring individual achievement in STEM;
  • Network with peers who have similar interests;
  • Hear research presentations by other students;
  • Develop skills to help prepare for undergraduate and graduate pursuits in STEM fields;
  • Hear nationally renowned scientists speak on their work;
  • Qualify for significant scholarships and other recognition; and
  • Advance to the national symposium.

Who attends JSHS?

Southern California high school students (grades 9-12) interested in STEM studies can participate either as a presenter or as a student delegate.

Who can present at the Southern California Regional JSHS?

Any high school student from Southern California may submit an abstract and a paper for consideration. See website, https://www.chem.uci.edu/~jshs/, for Southern California counties.

How do I present at the Southern California Regional JSHS?

  • STEP 1: Students in grades 9–12 select an area of research:

    • Medicine and Health/Behavioral Science
    • Biomedical Sciences, Molecular/Cellular
    • Engineering and Technology
    • Math and Computer Sciences/Computer Engineering
    • Physical Sciences
    • Chemistry

  • STEP 2: Students conduct original research.

  • STEP 3: By December, 15, 2019, 11:59 PM (Pacific Time), students submit for evaluation an abstract and paper reporting the results of their STEM research.  Abstracts should follow the format found at https://www.chem.uci.edu/~jshs/.

  • STEP 4:  The Regional JSHS assembles a review panel to review students’ abstracts and papers to select students to present their result in oral presentation.

What if my abstract is not accepted?

Sponsorship

 JSHS is a Tri-Service – U.S. Army, Navy and Air Force −program that encourages high school students to conduct original research in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).  JSHS is a collaborative effort between the research arm of the Department of Defense and nationwide colleges and universities. JSHS aims to prepare and support students to contribute as future scientists and engineers, conducting STEM research on behalf of or directly for the Department of Defense (DoD), federal research laboratories to help advance the nation's scientific and technological progress. Through JSHS, over 8,000 youth annually compete in 47 regional symposia covering the U.S., Puerto Rico, and DoD Dependent Schools in Europe and the Pacific to receive recognition, incentives, and scholarships for their research achievements.

The regional JSHS at the University of California, Irvine co-operatively sponsored by the Department of Chemistry, School of Physical Sciences, University of California, Irvine.
