Webinar summary

Dementia is common and is increasing amongst people over 65 years old living with Alzheimer's or another dementia-related condition. Many people living with dementia undergo imaging at some time and many who are living with cancer will also receive radiotherapy.

During the webinar, Dr Tracy O’Regan, SCoR professional officer for clinical imaging and research, will review the latest guidance and strategies around caring for people with dementia in imaging and radiotherapy departments.

Students, assistant practitioners and radiographers should always aim to provide a good experience for their patients, affording them dignity, respect and autonomy, and causing minimal distress.

The webinar will include:

  • A contemporary definition of dementia
  • Sharing of information and identification of a person living with dementia
  • Approaches to supporting people living with dementia within a clinical imaging or radiotherapy setting
  • Strategies for person-centred communication
  • Mental capacity guidance and duties with respect to consent
  • Recognising and responding to changes in behaviour including withdrawal of consent and the concept of unwise decisions
  • A review of SCoR clinical practice guidelines and NICE guidance for assessment, management and support for people living with dementia and their carers
