Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) provides a flexible set of clinical tools, including a full range of active and practical strategies and techniques (cognitive restructuring, exposure techniques, social skills training, relaxation training, problem solving, self-help manuals). You will learn a general overview of the practical application of CBT strategies, as well as how to apply these problem solving strategies in your practice. Problem-solving treatment has been shown to be effective for a wide range of emotional disorders and is effective in the context of short-term therapy. Problem-solving treatment focuses on the here and now and helps clients use their own skills and resources to function better. You will also be introduced to the use of self-help manuals when clients and therapists are unwilling or unable to commit to a full course of CBT. In this case, self-help manuals are useful in bringing about improvement in psychological functioning, yet they are of little use outside of a supportive therapeutic relationship.
The format of this training includes didactic presentation, experiential exercises, feedback and supervision, a focus on micro-skill development. You will be encouraged to practice the skills with your clients between classes. Time will be designated to discuss your experiences in implementing these newly learned strategies until you gain confidence and experience. You will be given individual feedback by both the instructor as well as by the other participants. Each skill introduced by the instructor will be accompanied by some brief reading materials. A reading list will be provided.
You will learn to:
