Challenges in spinal cord injury research and clinical management

This School is being hosted for the fourth time and is a joint initiative of Wings for Life and International Spinal Research Trust (Spinal Research). The aim is to review the neurobiology of neurological injury, with a particular focus on spinal cord injury.

Acute neurological injury can lead to dramatic and irreversible consequences for individuals, and it is a cause of lifelong disability worldwide. It has a major impact not only on patients, but also on families and carers, and represents a significant burden in terms of health costs.
Clinical and basic science lectures, as well as workshops from distinguished specialists in the field will discuss merits and limitations of existing models of injury used in research. We will also present an overview of the key clinical issues in this field, and of promising translational research avenues.
I would strongly recommend this summer school for anyone involved in SCI research. The talks from world-leading experts were enlightening and I learnt a lot about the research area. The work of the clinicians working directly with SCI patients was truly inspirational.”
