Impacts of Immigration Policies on Institutional Investors
    Indigo D

This session is hosted by Service Employees International Union (SEIU).

The “Impacts of Immigration Policies on Institutional Investors" will provide attendees an opportunity to consider investment risks and other fiduciary issues related to the latest developments in U.S. immigration policy. The panel will also address emerging responses on the part of state governments, U.S. corporates, and institutional investors. Research has shown that policies aimed at removing undocumented immigrants could reduce U.S. gross domestic product by 1.4 percent in the short-run and by 2.6 percent in the long-run. Because the conference is taking place in San Diego, the largest border city in the state with the largest undocumented workforce, particular attention will be paid to risks within our host state.

Implementing the Paris Agreement Goals Through Sustainable Food Supply Chains
    Elevation Room (30th Floor)

This session is hosted by CERES. (Closed to press)

Implementing the Paris Agreement goals through sustainable food supply chains: Engaging capital markets and corporates to drive deforestation-free food supply chains

Commercial agriculture represents two thirds of tropical deforestation and is a key driver of the conversion of peatlands, which store some of the highest quantities of carbon on the planet. The conversion of forests, savannahs, and peatlands to agriculture creates roughly 11 percent of total GHGs globally.

Because they provide critical and scalable climate mitigation solutions, tropical forests have been placed at a center-stage of the Paris Agreement. The challenge is to reconcile food production with ambitious mitigation efforts in the agricultural sector.

This panel will address the opportunities and challenges to align capital markets with conservation goals by incentivizing companies to address deforestation driven by production of soft commodities such as cattle, soy, palm oil and timber.

This panel of experts with highlight:

    • How high-quality financial and risk analysis, material and relevant to both companies and investors, can drive better climate and sustainability decisions, with a vision of reframing climate and deforestation risks as a core business interest of major corporations in the food supply chain.
    • The best engagement strategy for corporate to set commitment and reinforce them to implement deforestation free soft commodities and food supply chains.

    • Hugh Brown, Florida SBA
    • Carlos Saviani, WWF

Institutional investors are reminded every proxy season how uncontested director elections may at times feel tedious and routine. Yet casting these votes is perhaps the single greatest manifestation of shareholder rights. And as the ability to vote against incumbents becomes a market-wide norm, outcomes take on more than symbolic meaning.

Currently few measures of director performance, aside from attending three-quarters of the previous year’s meetings, appear to sway most elections. This two-hour program will explore various avenues for investors, as well as boards themselves, to augment basic quantitative measures with less obvious, not necessarily formulaic, and sometimes wholly qualitative considerations surrounding director performance.

Diversifying Diversity: Exploring the Dimensions of a Truly Diverse Board
    Elevation Room (30th Floor)

The business value of diversity is clear, yet the goal of defining, measuring and achieving broad diversity in the boardroom remains elusive. The KPMG Board Leadership Center will bring together CII members and leaders in boardroom diversity to engage in an interactive discussion on the current status of women, Latino, Asian-American, African-American and LGBT+ directors on public company boards and suggestions on moving the needle.  Space will be limited in order to facilitate a meaningful and interactive participant discussion.  Former public company director and University of Southern California Marshall School of Business Professor Judith Blumenthal will moderate the conversation.

We will examine the implications of national and international accords such as the Paris Agreement on investors (and the U.S. pulling out), increasing regulation around the world regarding greenhouse gas emissions, and the role of investors to examine carbon asset risk and respond to climate change risks. This includes approaches from divestment of climate harming holdings to helping companies become climate resilient through means of active ownership, including proxy voting and engagement.
