Welcome from the Conference Co-Chairs

 Donovan & Chris

Welcome to SOUL 2018!

This will be a conference like none in recent memory – a time for us to share and discover what brings soul to a place, a time to listen to stories from the field, and a time to reflect on the essence of soul in our practice.  To prepare for SOUL 2018 we’ve scoured the depths of our collective minds and hearts and reached out across the country in search of unique stories and experiences that will contribute to a one-of-a-kind conference.   At SOUL 2018 we’ve made room for presentations that don’t fit the usual conference fare, while still offering staple content participants have come to expect at a national event.  The conference theme purposely seeks to highlight the ideas behind what gives a place soul.  If you’re visiting – we promise that you’ll leave with a very clear answer to that question, and part of that answer will surely include, that this place, like so many others across our country, has SOUL!

Why is Winnipeg a place that people return to, a place that people love, and sometimes a place that people love to hate! Perhaps it’s the idea that a place can be imperfect, that a place can be a little gritty, and in being so, it can be authentic, easy going, and a lot of fun.  It’s an explanation that offers an answer to the oft asked question – Why Winnipeg?  This summer the Historic Exchange District in downtown Winnipeg will be abuzz with street-life – all day and into the night – as Winnipeg plays host to North America’s second largest Fringe Festival.  We’ll gather at the architecturally renowned and spectacular Canadian Museum for Human Rights to kick things off, and party on Winnipeg’s first ‘Woonerf’ to wrap things up!  We’ll feature Manitoba music and arts as a backdrop throughout the conference; we’ll offer rural, urban, multi-disciplinary content that is both contemplative and structured; we’ve invited a non-planner as a keynote speaker to tell us a little bit about places around the world; and we’ll party into the evening at our Prairie Soul Street Party!

We look forward to your visit!
