Travelling to Malta
Travelling to Valetta, Malta
Delegates are responsible for their own travel to Malta, including paying for flights and other travel.
Luqa International Airport is located about 10 km from Valetta. There are regular flights to Malta from most European destinations, north Africa and further destinations; from many locations you will need a connecting flight in Europe. The conference centre is around 30 minutes drive from the airport.
There will be a Commonwealth Local Government Conference 2017 Helpdesk at the airport to help direct you to a hotel shuttle service. Taxis are also available from the airport.
Climate and clothing
Malta's climate is typical of the Mediterranean and is strongly influenced by the sea. The Maltese Islands have a pleasantly sunny climate with a daily average of around 12 hours sunshine in summer going down to 5 to 6 hours in mid-winter.
In November, the temperature in Valetta will be quite mild, and days may be clear, warm and sunny, but there is also a possibility of rain at this time of year. Average temperatures range from xx°C to yy°C. It is advisable to bring an umbrella, some rainwear, just in case and some warmer clothing for evening. Smart, semi-formal is recommended during the conference and more formal clothing/ traditional dress is suitable for social events.
Currency: Malta is part of the Eurozone and uses the Euro. Though there are many banks and cash machines, there are few other places that change cash other than the hotels which usually offer a poor exchange rate. It is therefore advisable to bring some cash with you. . Most hotels and shops accept credit cards.
Health and insurance
We advise you to take out medical insurance and insurance for your travel: the conference organisers (CLGF) do not take responsibility for health or travel insurance. EU nationals should have the European heath insurance card (EHIC).
English is widely spoken though Maltese is the national language.
Malta uses the British-type 3 square-pin plug to connect to the power supply. Adaptors are widely available.
The time zone in Valetta is GMT + 01:00 hour
