HCOS Community Connections are weekly classes committed to providing discipleship-based Christian education. Community Connections aim to be quality learning communities led by experienced instructors with a passion for creating an engaging learning environment. We support home educating families by actively exploring and experiencing a range of knowledge and skills, while consistently nurturing relationships with God and each other. We believe strongly in the benefits to families and students of learning together in a collaborative environment.
Vernon CC is a wonderful community of learning for students Kindergarten - Grade 12. Our sessions are held once a week at Grace Baptist Church, for 22 weeks of the year, from 9:30am-1:30pm. This year, from an interdisciplinary approach, students in Kindergarten - Grade 8 will be addressing Social Studies competencies with an integration of writing skills and Physical Education.
Our 1920-21 Teachers will be:
Krista Barney: Kindergarten
TBA: Grades 1/2
Aimee Imbeau: Grades 3/4
Laura Klassen: Grades 5/6
Shari Bootsma: Grades 7/8
*Class configuration may change in response to student application numbers.Community Connections will also provide HCOS Enrolled students in grades 9-12 with a unique work experience program (WEX), where students will assist teachers in the classroom, complete assignments that pertain to their course learning, and collaborate with their peers by creating, planning, and problem solving various activities within the CC environment. For students in grade 9-12, this course will meet the practical requirements for WEX 10, 11, or 12. For grade 9's this course could replace the second language credits or it could meet the requirements for Career Education 9. *Please note, grades 9-12 students interested in the CC HCOS Work Experience program will need to be interviewed and accepted upon determination that this program is a good fit for the student. Additionally, Gr.10-12 will need to sign-up for the HCOS WEX Course.
In the case of students with higher levels of need, we use a team-based approach to provide an inclusive and safe learning environment. This team includes members such as Student Case Managers, Parents, Educational Assistants, CC Coordinators, and Classroom Instructors, and draws on relevant recommendations from third party professionals to put together a learning and/or safety plan. This process incurs additional costs, which are subsidized by HCOS, and requires additional administrative oversight as well as access to confidential student files. For these reasons, students with high levels of need, such as funded Special Education students, must be enrolled with HCOS to ensure we have the resources and information necessary for a safe and successful learning experience for all.
HCOS students not already participating in a 20/21 CC or longer term event will be given priority. Exceptions may be granted on a case by case basis in consideration of those significantly involved in the CC/ event, and factors such as the scope/extent of the offering involved and the availability of seats.
