Comprehensive Nursing Assessment Refresher

Web-Enhanced Course

j0386204Students entering a graduate nurse practitioner program at the University of Rochester or other colleges and universities must be able to perform an accurate and confident physical assessment.  Some students have been away from this area of practice, and need an extra chance to refresh and practice the skills taught in their undergraduate programs.

This course, over two full days, will prepare the students to take an Advanced Health Assessment class and provide practical instruction and practice with lab demonstrations which will give students the skills and confidence to perform at their best!

Classroom Content
The method is the "systems approach" to physical assessment.Instruction on assessment will be provided for each of the following major components of the assessment: General survey; head, face, neck, eyes and ears (HEENT), lungs and thorax; cardiovascular and peripheral vascular, abdominal, musculoskeletal, and neurological systems.

Laboratory Content
Assessment laboratory sessions will be in the afternoon each of the two class days. During each lab session students will work in groups of 2- 3 students to practice with hands-on learning and develop their physical assessment skills by examining one another. To provide privacy for classmates and facilitate the assessment process patient gowns and half sheets will be available for students in the Nursing Skills Lab. It is also helpful to wear loose, comfortable clothing to the lab(including shorts, t-shirts, etc.).
