Michael R. McMullan, MD, FACC – Professor of Medicine and Director of the Adult Congenital Heart Program at University Heart
Dr. Mike McMullan completed his medical degree, internal medicine residency, chief residency and cardiology fellowship training at the University of Mississippi Medical Center (UMMC). He then went to Duke University Medical Center for advanced fellowship training in adult congenital and valvular heart disease and interventional cardiology.
Dr. McMullan returned to UMMC where he established the adult congenital heart clinic at University Heart before moving to the Jackson Heart Clinic. In 2014, he returned to UMMC as the director of the adult congenital heart program and, in addition to treating adult congenital heart patients, works closely with pediatric cardiology and the congenital heart surgery program.
Jorge Salazar, MD is Chief of the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery and Co-Director of the Children’s Heart Center at Batson Children’s Hospital, University of Mississippi Medical Center. Prior to starting the program at the University of Mississippi Medical Center in 2010, he was the Associate Professor of Surgery and Pediatrics at Texas Children’s Hospital (Baylor) from 2007-2010 and Chief of Congenital Heart Surgery at Christus Santa Rosa Children’s Hospital with the University of Texas Health Science Center, San Antonio from 2004-2007.
Dr. Salazar graduated from the University of Washington Medical School in 1994. He completed his General Surgery, Research Fellowship, and Cardiothoracic Surgery Training at the Johns Hopkins Hospital in 2003. Dr. Salazar performed an additional year of focused Congenital Heart Surgery training at the University of California, San Francisco before beginning his career at the University of Texas.
Dr. Salazar has published numerous research manuscripts and is an Associate Editor of the Annals of Thoracic Surgery.
The focus of the symposium is to educate and train the target audience regarding the care of the congenital heart patient by a multidisciplinary team composed of pediatric and adult specialist in: surgery, cardiology, critical care , imaging, nursing, ECHO. The formation of a new center for adult and pediatric congenital heart disease at UMMC has created a particular need for a comprehensive education of those caring for a dramatically increased number of pediatric and adult heart patients in Mississippi. This symposium provides a forum of expert speakers to present the latest knowledge in congenital heart disease diagnosis and treatment.
The intended audience for this symposium is pediatric and adult cardiologists, pediatric and adult cardiac surgeons, nurses, nurse practitioners, ECHO techs, students and fellows.
