Connecting Internal Audit and Risk Management
(5 CPE/ CPD Credits)
(8:30 AM -1:00 PM)
This half-day event will concentrate on the following 4 topics to improve risk intelligence for all Internal Audit Departments:
Introduction to the Risk Intelligent Enterprise David Hodgson
8:30 – 9:00
In today’s unpredictable and highly competitive business environment, it’s important to take a holistic view of governance, risk, and compliance – focusing not only on the risks that can threaten value, but also on taking risks to create value. Mr. Hodgson will discuss the latest techniques in risk management and how internal auditors can take a lead in embedding a thoughtful awareness of risk and compliance into the very fabric of the organization - so that people, processes and technology work together to help the enterprise stay in control of the risks it chooses to take.
Internal Audit Data Analytics
9:00 – 10:30
This session will discuss the use of and benefits from utilizing Internal Audit Data Analytics including:
Background and Overview
Like other corporate functions, Internal Audit is being asked to do more with less. But in the case of Internal Audit, the “more” doesn’t translate into more of the same type of work being done with fewer resources. Rather, the effects of the financial crisis and continued budget tightening have led to a charge for Internal Audit to “build a better radar” – one that focuses resources more effectively on the key risks. Business leaders are also asking Internal Audit to provide uncommon insights into enterprise risk through data analyses that help predict not only the likelihood of events occurring but also their potential impacts. By meeting these demands, Internal Audit can provide greater value to key business stakeholders and redefine its role as a source of management information.
Through the use of Data Analytics (via advanced processes and technologies), Internal Audit organizations across industries can cast a wider net as they identify risks across the enterprise, develop insights through data analysis, and address the evolving regulatory environment. These tools can support Internal Audit’s transition from primarily manual audits to repeatable automated processes, to continuous and sustainable analytics that provide invaluable information and perspective to the organization. They can help transform internal audits from traditionally periodic audits to dynamic, exception-triggered reviews, which are more efficient and effective.
Enterprise Risk Management – Key Concepts and Practical Approaches
10:45 – 12:15
This session will introduce participants to key concepts related to Enterprise Risk (“ERM”) Management, including defining ERM governance, developing an ERM infrastructure and deploying ERM processes. As part of the session, we will share both key accomplishments and challenges/solutions learned through developing and implementing ERM programs and discuss practical, sizeable applications of ERM. In addition, the role of internal audit and compliance in an organization’s ERM program will be explored.
