The Transportation Research board is organizing a workshop to develop a dialogue among researchers, government officials, and private industry representatives on data sources and tools that can help in understanding the relationships between freight transportation, infrastructure, the economy, and air quality. Planners, modelers, and policy makers interested in available freight data and modeling tools, developing improved data sources and tools and learning from past experiences should participate in this workshop. Although the focus is on the issues facing California, the issues and approaches to be discussed are or soon will be applicable throughout the country. The planning team seeks proposals for presentations describing past projects or ongoing projects and research related to the following issues:

Methods for modeling interactions, including technical details of modeling approaches and changes necessary to capture trade-offs or limited data availability and quality. Of particular interest are new methodologies, or methodologies adopted from other applications, and the specific problems to which these have been applied.
Data Availability and Sources, including public, private, proprietary sources. Among the issues to be addressed are barriers to access, contracts, relationships, and negotiations required to obtain data, unexpected challenges, data quality, cleaning, and validation.
Data Development and Integration, including integration of data across modes and across multiple sources. Among the issues to be addressed are lack of comprehensive data, creative solutions, future goals and requirements, and impacts of data quality.
Case Studies, including past projects that have used or collected data and used or developed tools to consider the relationships between freight transportation, infrastructure, the economy and air quality.

Who Should Attend

This workshop is designed to develop a dialogue among researchers, government officials, and private industry representatives on data sources to understand freight transportation activity and its impact on air quality. Planners, modelers, and policy makers interested in currently available freight data and in developing improved data sources should participate in this conference. Although focusing on California, the issues and approaches discussed in this meeting are or soon will be applicable throughout the country.
