Deaf Rights Symposium

This event has been cancelled. If you have any questions, please contact the event planner directly.

The Great Lakes ADA Center's mission is to increase awareness and knowledge with the ultimate goal of achieving voluntary compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act within the regions we serve (Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio, and Wisconsin). This is accomplished within targeted audiences through provisions of customized training, expert assistance, and dissemination of information developed by various sources, including the federal agencies responsible for enforcement of the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 (ADA).

The Americans with Disabilities Act and other similar civil rights laws are purposefully broad to include protections for a diverse population of people with disabilities. How do these laws apply to d/Deaf specific issues? How can d/Deaf people utilize these laws to their fullest capacity to protect their right to equal opportunity? What should service providers know when it comes to serving d/Deaf individuals? This conference provides education and professional development to providers and consumers working with and navigating the rights of d/Deaf persons toward effective communication and equitable participation in society. The conference will focus on issues of access and equitable treatment in the areas of:

  • Arts and Culture
  • Employment
  • Government Services
  • High Education
  • Healthcare
  • Judicial and Law Enforcement
  • Professional Services (Legal, Financial, etc)

The Great Lakes ADA Center is funded by the National Institute on Disability, Independent Living, Rehabilitation and Research (NIDILRR grant number 90DP0091-01-00), a division of the Administration for the Community Living (ACL), Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and housed at the Department of Disability and Human Development under the College of Applied Health Sciences at the University of Illinois at Chicago.
