STARTING A NONPROFIT ORGANIZATION
Hear how three passionate Founders pursued their singular visions and experienced the joys and tribulations of starting a nonprofit organization in the Coachella Valley. Each one overcame obstacles inherent to the process and motivated fellow volunteers and donors to join in the journey.
Guest panelists Joan Busick (Girlfriend Factor), Ron Celona (Coachella Valley Repertory Theatre) and Roberta Klein (Read With Me) will speak about recruiting board members and other volunteers, incorporating their nonprofit, applying for tax exempt status, budgeting, marketing and fundraising.
Joan was motivated to launch The Girlfriend Factor, an organization that supports women needing a second chance, because in the 1980’s she literally was one of them. She reminisces, “Early on I simply allowed life to happen to me, but finally realized I needed to regain control and get an education to improve my life, as well as the lives of my two young boys. I learned first-hand that a combination of financial assistance and encouragement from other women was a magical combination of success.”
Ron is founding director of CV Repertory, a six-year-old professional theatre company. He was also one of the founders of the Joslyn Center’s Newman Theatre. CV Rep presents thought-provoking, innovative theatre of substance and outreach programs that enhance the quality of life for more than 8,000 Coachella Valley residents and visitors annually. Says his fan Gavin McCloud, “What distinguishes Ron from so many people is his heart and his caring…not only for the theatre staff, but for all human beings.”
Roberta and her husband founded Read With Me in 2004 to help elementary school students from low-income neighborhoods in the Coachella Valley become successful readers and students. Today, Read With Me sends more than 700 English speaking volunteers to schools where Spanish-speaking students need help with learning English and reading. Congressman Raul Ruiz says, “The Kleins have created opportunities for Coachella Valley students that would not have existed otherwise, and Read with Me’s success serves as a model for other organizations.”
