Amy L. Sullivan graduated from Brandon high school after moving to MS from Florida. She received her B.S. in dental hygiene from the University of MS Medical Center in 1997 and worked in private practice dental offices until 2002. She earned her Master’s degree in Biomedical Sciences and later a PhD in Clinical Health Sciences (2009). Dr. Sullivan is currently teaching all the Dental Hygiene Practice and Principles courses (I- Basics, II-Advanced, III-Special Needs, and IV-Specialties), Research (Intro, Oral Health Research), online Research Methods, online Special Needs, online Pathophysiology, Medical Terminology, and participates in all DH labs/clinics at the University of MS dental hygiene program. She has previously taught Radiology and Practice Management and has received the Nelson Order award for teaching excellence. Her research interest and focus is treating people with special needs (specifically Spinal Cord Injuries). She involves her students in special needs by collaboration with the occupational therapy department on proper transfers of wheelchair patients to the dental chair. She is also the dental hygiene chair for Admissions. She has a special interest in “hands-on” performance of her applicants and hopes to publish her findings soon. Additionally, she has several publications related to the oral health of people with spinal cord injuries and was recently honored in the Methodist Rehab Ways & Means Research Edition (2012). She is a strong supporter of her state and national association. Dr. Sullivan has served as president for her state and on national committees with the American Dental Hygienist’s Association as well as the American Dental Association. She currently serves as a basic science expert for the ADA’s National Dental Hygiene Board Testing.
