Direct Assessment and treatment of Emotional Factors in Psychosomatic Conditions

This one day course will provide a detailed video recording based study of the spectrum of psychosomatic patients who can benefit from Intensive Short-term Dynamic Psychotherapy. 

This course will detail the metapsychology of emotional operations, the somatic experience of feelings, how to assess emotional factors in somatic presentations, how to initiate the treatment process and how to build emotional capacities. 

Videotape based cases to be reviewed will include tremor, fibromyalgia, irritable bowel syndrome, migraine and conversion disorder. 

This information is particularly helpful to understand and handle treatment resistant psychosomatic patients not responding to traditional medical and psychological care. 

This course is open to mental health professionals, physicians, social workers, and students and will cover the following areas:

 

  • Overview of Metapsychology of somatization
  • Overview of the spectrum of suitable patients with videotape illustrations
  • Psychodiagnostic assessment to determine level of format of somatic anxiety
  • Nature of interventions including pressure, challenge, and head-on-collision with resitance
  • Somatic pathways of feelings including rage, guilt and grief
  • Capacity building formats for conversion and irritable bowel patients.

 
At the conclusion of this activity, participants should be able to:

1. Describe an approach to diagnosing emotional factors in patients with somatic symptoms.
2. Describe the somatic pathways of rage and quiet.
3. Name five emotionally driven formats of somatization.
