In a performance, the jazz musician is constantly making decisions based on actions of the moment; we call this "improvisation." These improvised performances may appear to be random but they are actually determined by certain structures as set out in the piece of music.
The art of improvisation, within the context of the jazz genre, can provide insight into how we might approach our students and our classrooms. It can aid in our preparation, help engage our students and allow us to deal with the unexpected variables that present themselves in the classroom.
