Pre-conference Sessions

Pre-conference sessions offer DEC attendees an opportunity to explore topics in-depth with experts in the field. 

Pre-conference workshops will take place Tuesday, October 1st, 8:30 -11:30 AM & 1:00 - 4:00 PM. Each pre-conference session lasts a total of three hours.

If registered by September 30th, each session costs $50.00. 
If registered on or after October 1st, each session costs $75.00.

Meeting FACES: Community-Based Programming for Underrepresented Families of Children with Autism

Abstract: There exists a wealth of resources to support the needs of children with autism and their families in NC, and a troubling gap in underserved families' access to those services. The purpose of Meeting FACES was to bring together parents, educators, and providers to learn more about available autism services.

 


MTSS Frameworks: Successfully Educating Young Children with Disabilities in ECE/ECSE Blended Program

Abstract: Many early learning programs have shifted into inclusive/blended MTSS frameworks to enhance delivery of high quality services.  Learn how educators, parents, and program leaders are partnering to ensure that the needs of learners who have or are at-risk for developmental delays and disabilities are met in these systems. 

 


Trauma Crossroads: Where Trauma and Developmental Disabilities Intersect

Abstract: Trauma-informed practice (TIP) is a vital movement.  Come connect the intersectionality in children and the impact of trauma on both them and their family. The presenters include a parent and the co-author of the "TIP for Early Childhood Educators: Relationship-Based Approaches that Support Healing and Build Resilience in Young Children."

 


Eliminating Suspension and Expulsion through the Pyramid Model

Presenters: Barbara J. Smith - Lise Fox - Mary Louise Hemmeter - Phil Strain

Abstract: High fidelity implementation of the Pyramid Model has shown positive outcomes for children, teachers and programs. This workshop covers: 1) Pyramid Model resources, 2) policies to eliminate suspension and expulsion, and 3) data tools for making decisions about implicit bias and appropriate responses to behavior. Participants will develop action plans.  

 


Foster Executive Functioning with Environmental, Instructional and Child-specific Scaffolds: Build for Tomorrow

Abstract: This hands-on workshop will increase knowledge and skills of professionals and families on the "why" and "how" of building executive functioning in young children, those who have or at risk for developmental delays. Learn to employ environmental, instructional and child-specific scaffolds woven routinely into growth-promoting experiences in inclusive settings. 

 


Gender Fluid and Transgender Preschoolers: Supporting These Young Learners and Their Families

Abstract: Children typically solidify their gender by ages of 3-6.  What happens when family, society and your own body says that you are a boy/ girl, but your brain/heart tells you something else? What does a young learner do whose gender is fluid?  Come and we will learn together.
