This four day IMO compliant and USCG approved course is designed to enhance the safety of navigation by providing licensed deck department personnel with the knowledge and skills necessary to safely and fully employ ECDIS. Our ECDIS course meets the STCW 2010 Manila Amendment specifications and is now APPROVED FOR 32 HOURS (4 days). Each student will have access to an individual desktop simulation station using the most recent version of Transas NT Pro 5000 Ship Simulation Suite including the NaviSailor 4000 ECDIS software. Special attention and care are provided by our experienced instructors to deliver high quality content at a comfortable pace to students of all levels of computer abilities.
USCG and IMO Standards
This USCG approved 32 HOUR (4 Day) course (MARTSI-179) meets the training requirements found within 46 CFR 11.305; 46 CFR 11.307; 46 CFR 11.309; 46 CFR 11.311; 46 CFR 11.313; 46 CFR 11.315; 46 CFR 11.317; 46 CFR 11.319; 46 CFR 11.321; and satisfies applicable requirements to successfully demonstrate competence to “Plan and conduct a passage and determine position: through knowledge of and ability to use ECDIS” of Table A-II/1 of the STCW Code; AND be considered to have successfully demonstrated the competence to “Determine position and the accuracy of resultant position fix: position determination using ECDIS with specific knowledge of its operating principles, limitations, source of errors, detection of misrepresentation of information and methods of correction to obtain accurate position fixing” of Table A-II/2 of the STCW Code.
This course will also satisfy the specific tasks from the National Assessment Guidelines found in NVIC 12-14:

THIS COURSE IS REQUIRED BY 31 DECEMBER, 2016 TO MAINTAIN A VALID STCW ENDORSEMENT.

Lodging and Meals
USMRC offers a wide variety of lodging options ranging from economy to luxury in and around historic Newport – all within very close driving proximity to our facilities – and we have negotiated special discount rates with several select properties. These discounted rates are only available by booking through the USMRC Registrar. For meals, we do not provide breakfast or dinner as most of our students prefer to take advantage of the large selection of dining options available in nearby Newport. For the budget minded, a few of our select lodging properties provide breakfast and/or dinner included in the lodging rate. Lunch – for a nominal fee, USMRC provides custom made to order box lunches catered from a local delicatessen and delivered right to our facility.
Students are responsible for making their own travel arrangements. The closest airport to us is Green Airport (PVD) located in Warwick, Rhode Island which is approximately 30 miles / 40 minutes driving time from our facilities. Logan Airport (BOS) in Boston is 75 miles / 90-100 minutes driving time away. For rail transport, Amtrak serves both Providence and Boston’s South Station and bus service is available from both rail stations to/from nearby Newport.
