SouthSTAR Services, a 60-year-old nonprofit organization supporting people with developmental disabilities, tried to develop self-advocacy services for a number of years. A few years ago, the organization changed its approach to self-advocacy. Today, self-advocacy is becoming ingrained in the organization’s culture. Learn how this organization changed its emphasis about self-advocacy and how it resulted in receiving an exemplary rating during its last CARF survey. This presentation will share information about previous attempts at self-advocacy, cultivating staff buy-in, ensuring leadership support, accessing resources to support self-advocacy, and strategies to sustain these efforts.
