Andrea Celenza, PhD, Instructor

This workshop presents clinical illustrations to facilitate learning of the varieties of meanings of erotic transferences.  It addresses the deficiency in our literature and theories of technique to encourage more open discussion about erotic transferences in all of their manifestations.  Since erotic transferences frequently develop in the course of analytic therapy and psychoanalysis, clinicians need to become familiar with and comfortable with techniques for handling them. This workshop aims to change the tendency to avoid or minimize the manifestation of erotic transferences, to help patients face sexual and other problems. There are no risks associated with this program.

Specific learning objectives:

  1. Identify and explore aspects of erotic transferences and countertransferences, especially as these relate to the multiple meanings underlying erotic transferences as a defensive structure.
  2. Explore the ways in which the analyst’s countertransference can foster or inhibit the emergence of the full intensity of erotic transferences at different phases of the treatment.
  3. Acquire greater comfort in the identification and exploration of their own countertransference, especially as it leans erotic.
