“Writing to Capture Readers”

Our Keynoter, Jeff Gerke, is one of those people we enjoy having at our conferences, not just because he thoroughly knows the world of writing and publishing, but because he is fun, approachable, good-humored, and he truly enjoys helping other writers. You can hear it in his voice in his workshops, and you can see it on his face when you sit at the table with him talking about your projects. We are thrilled to have Jeff as our keynote speaker, sharing things from his heart and his vast experience in writing, editing, and teaching.

Jeff has worn several hats in the publishing world, including novelist, writing instructor, publisher, and a much-in-demand editor. Though he has a penchant for fantasy, he knows how to make a story work in any genre, which is why Writer’s Digest tapped Jeff as one of their popular writing coaches and has published five of his books on writing fiction (e.g., Plot versus Character, The First 50 Pages, Write your Novel in a Month, The Art and Craft of Writing Christian Fiction, and The Irresistible Novel)

We’re familiar with Jeff’s articles and books about writing, but his most recent book (Irrevocable) reveals his theological acumen and pastoral nature, discussing the strength of the bond between God and His people. In his first keynote, Jeff will address “The Spiritual Roadblocks to Writing,” those inward struggles that keep Christian writers from being the productive, prolific wordsmiths we want to be. Whatever may be holding us back from finishing our book or writing more articles, chances are that others are facing the same inner conflicts. I encourage you to attend the fall conference and hear Jeff address the unique spiritual issues of the Christian writer.

With all the buzz about independent publishing and do-it-yourself book creation, many of us have wondered if it can be done from the comfort of our own computer. Or perhaps we’ve tried and were not happy with the results. In his second keynote speech, “How to Self-Publish a Book in Print and E-Book,” Jeff will give us the tools to create our independently published book, while still having the professional quality that readers demand.

Once again, our one-day OCW conference has something for everyone and is one of the most affordable ways to receive writing instruction and encouragement. Whether it’s poetry, publishing, fiction, or marketing, we have workshops designed for you by people who know what they’re talking about and are eager to help you reach your writing goals. And there is no replacing the time sitting with other writers, talking about our projects and struggles, encouraging one another to keep moving forward. Time and again we hear that the personal connections people make at our conferences are among the most crucial influences in their lives as writers.

I appreciate the Rolling Hills Community Church in Portland for allowing us to use their facilities for our conference. Be there on October 21st for the instruction and encouragement you need for the next level in your writing career. I look forward to seeing you there as together we learn about “Writing to Capture Readers.”
