Mealtimes offer opportunities for parents and children to build healthy relationships. When a child struggles to eat, it can significantly change the way he or she participates in mealtime routines. These struggles affect nutrition and growth as well as family relationships during and outside of mealtimes. Understanding of the myriad of ways a child and family's experiences can disrupt feeding development is critical to guiding caregivers in establishing more successful mealtime routines.
This workshop highlights the importance of considering cultural and family practices as well as individual characteristics when assessing feeding challenges and during treatment planning. Emphasis is placed on the need to build trust between providers, families, and children in order to support family-focused mealtime routines. Also highlighted are best practices related to feeding therapy in Early Intervention with an focus on decision-making, supporting parent and family participation, and team collaboration.
Participants are expected to have basic knowledge of Illinois Early Intervention Key Principles and Best Practices.
