Fire Strong
Atlanta Barbell Gym

"Strong people are harder to kill than weak people, and more useful in general." - Mark Rippetoe

There is no more "functional" fitness than strength training.  Being stronger makes possible what was impossible, and it makes easier what was once hard.

Fire Strong is a two-day class designed to teach you the basic barbell lifts, geared toward incorporating strength training into the fire service lifestyle. This class is perfect for firefighters who want to improve their fireground performance, but need somewhere to start. If you're an experienced lifter, but you've never had platform coaching, this class is still for you.

Topics covered will include: the why, what, and how of strength; how to perform the squat, deadlift, and press; and the programming behind linear progression. There will be discussions of conditioning, nutrition, and recovery, especially as they pertain to firefighters. A Q&A session is also included.

Led by certified Starting Strength Coach Niki Sims, coaching will be based on the Starting Strength method.  In addition to Niki, Cobb County firefighter and Starting Strength Coach Mark Diffley will be on hand, along with several other experienced coaches.  There will be a large portion of the class spent performing the lifts on the platform.

What you need to bring:

Rigid, flat-soled shoes should be worn (weightlifting shoes, Chucks, etc.).  Socks, slippers, or flats are okay for deadlifts.  Spongey-soled shoes like running shoes, trainers, and the like are strongly discouraged.  Bare feet, flip-flops, sandals, and 5fingers-style "toe shoes" are not permitted.  Students need to wear either socks or pants that cover the shins for deadlifts.  If you have a belt, bring it.  Also bring snacks and a notebook.  When these coaches talk, you gon' want to take notes.
