    Pre-conference Event

    09:00  -  17:00
THURSDAY - Power Plate vibration certification

In order to integrate vibration training into every day programming, the Power Plate certification has been created to empower the trainer, coach or practitioner with the skills and knowledge to successfully integrate Power Plate technology into their day to day to day training to enhance movement preparation, performance and recovery with each and every client, whether in a fitness facility, elite sports, clinical or rehabilitation setting.

Combining both theory and practical application, this education is inspired by the Principles, Strategies and Techniques of Applied Functional Science (AFS) powered by Gray Institute. Power Plate is the most authentic functional tool to replicate and enhance the body’s response to gravity and ground reaction forces.

This certification explains the mechanisms by which WBV enhances the neuromusculoskeletal system; the method of nerve to muscle adaptation called reflexive stabilisation and includes plenty of opportunity to experience the fundamentals of functional movement and integration with whole body vibration.

Those attending will leave with a whole new experience of their own bodies and how to create incredible change in human beings. JP can’t wait to demonstrate the power of whole body vibration for almost any client, being in his own words “able to deliver health to the human, not just a new way of moving more effectively”.

    PRESENTED BY: John Polley (JP)

SESSION DESCRIPTION: Spend the day immersed in the challenge, enjoyment and experience that play can bring! Learn at least 40 games, drills and ways to play, centred around a range of different client profiles, and then how to adapt them for endless possibilities. However, this session is so much more than learning some new exercises to integrate into your business. It's also about understanding the science and application behind play; the who, why, what, how and when that will mean you can use this invaluable tool for maximum effect and maximum results. The times of play being a little distraction from 'important' or 'serious' training are gone. This is now understood as a vital tool for everyone from elite athletes through to those with severe restriction or mental health issues. Your presenter is John Polley (JP), says: "Play is so under-valued and misunderstood in our industry. It's one of the few activities or forms of exercise that mimics the effects of many of the things in life that bring us joy. That alone should be enough reason to use it. But then realise it works the body in all 3 dimensions, the way it was authentically designed to move, brings people together, enhances brain function, neural conditioning and emotional state, and you have an almost uniquely powerful and wonderful training modality" If you want to spend a day in your life purely focused on enjoyment for body, mind and emotions, this will deliver. As with all of JP’s work, it will also give you the tools to deliver this into your world, again and again.

    LEARNING OUTCOMES:

    • A working understanding of the benefits of play for physical performance and neuromyofascial response
    • A better understanding of the mental and emotional effects of play

    • A client centred system for determining what forms of play are suitable for the humans in front of you and how to adapt them for everyone The role of genetic predisposition and movement personality in prescribing play
    • Communication - how to deliver play to different movement personalities and populations so they are invested in the process.

Mobility or Stability? Why you hear conflicting advice from different experts and what they are not  (AC220, AC Block)

SESSION DESCRIPTION: Why is it that experts inundate us with the latest and greatest mobility drills that everyone MUST DO or they will fail at life. While a seperate group tells us that the biggest issue is a set of glutes that apparently ‘forgot’ how to work (despite the fact that we do glute activation drills Billions and Billions and Billions of times per day) or that you ‘core’ has less stability than Donald Trump? Who is right? Or is there something that they aren’t telling us? This session is 30% lecture, 70% practical designed to help you get an understanding of why and when each method is used to attain longer lasting results with a particular focus on the gait patterns of walking and running.

Recovery isn't just sleep - intentional programming of recovery beyond rest  (AF116, AF Block, Ground Floor)

SESSION DESCRIPTION: There's a common misconception that regular exercisers are over training when they get sick, injured or suffer discomfort. Whilst this may be true, it is often the case that these people are under recovered. As fitness professionals, we rightly focus on effective strategies for training. However, this can be compromised with a lack of appropriate recovery. Therefore it would serve both ourselves and our clients to help program their recovery. As a sleep deprived father, JP knew that he had to harness all the available recovery there was from other sources to help ensure continued enjoyment of movement and health, which meant researching the benefits of everything from massage to positive thinking. Here he wants to share how what you can do to help yourselves and help others create nourishing recovery experiences which ward off the rigours of training schedules and the stresses of modern life.

    LEARNING OUTCOMES:

    • Understand the effects of lack of recovery
    • Learn there are strategies beyond sleep which still activate our recovery systems
    • Understand a whole range of recovery strategies and how they benefit humans
    • Learn ways to program recovery for clients

This session will outline why that variance exists and take your nutrition awareness into the future of health

Increasing 3D Movement Strength Through Intelligent Motion  (Stadium, AH Block)

SESSION DESCRIPTION: Our focus to make athletes stronger, faster, jump higher or tackle harder is quite often broken into a segmented approach, more of a Zoom In perspective. In many years of Performance Coaching, I have experienced great results by understanding the movement patterns of what is required of the sport and then creating solutions for the athlete/weekend warrior/client to experience this. This is often through a more integrated approach or connecting the body and brain. If you are looking for something that may enhance your athlete, corporate, mum's and dad's or kids this session will be for you!

    LEARNING OUTCOMES:

    • Observing and identifying client movement strength in 3D motion

SESSION DESCRIPTION: We are often led to believe that the work and sweat we put into training directly equates to strength increases and the results we achieve. This unfortunately does not represent the whole truth, and most have to learn the hard way, having overtrained, plateaued or sustained countless injuries. Maximum effort alone with little understanding of programming, exercise execution and how the body responds hormonally to specific workouts, are just some of the reasons why our workout routines lead to frustrating strength plateaus that can be hard to break out of. This lecture will highlight some of the important considerations for effective strength gains over the training cycle.

Feet in 3 Worlds - past, present and future  (Marquee, Outside AJ Block)

SESSION DESCRIPTION: historical and contemporary insights into how NZ’s yoga trends have changed over time. Female members of the Theosophical Society first introduced yoga to NZ in 1889, and since then the country has continued to champion female leadership. Likewise, NZ has become one of the most culturally diverse countries worldwide, which means that yoga is not monolithic or static. Rather, the varied interests of NZ yoga-goers are reflected in many different contexts and changing styles. This lecture seeks to answer the questions, what is yoga today? And where is yoga heading in the future? Although local yoga-goers’ acceptance of diversity plays out in different dress-codes, spiritual identities, and imagined ideals, these differences can be both liberating and segregating. This lecture provides a fascinating timeline of yoga in NZ and is accompanied by a PowerPoint presentation (USB), showcasing changes taking place in yoga practices past, present and future.

Disordered Brains and Exercise: Welcoming People with Motor-Disorders into Fitness - Part 1  (AF319, AF Block, 3rd Floor)

    2 HOUR SESSION - PART 1

SESSION DESCRIPTION: It used to be that when people were diagnosed with chronic neurological conditions they were treated as ‘invalids’ -- told to be careful, to avoid fatigue or anything with an inherent risk of falling, to rest, to prepare for the worsening of their conditions, and to consider a wheelchair, and then were shown the door. Thankfully, this is no longer the case. Robust research supports the benefits of exercise for people with virtually every diagnosis – and even if a doctor doesn’t prescribe or recommend exercise these are a population of people who are researching what can be done and know that exercise might help make their journey with their condition over the rest of their lives a better one. This presentation will introduce you to the most common neuro-motor disorders and exercise guidelines for them to give you a starting place to understanding and confidence on how to work with these potentially long term clients.

LEARNING OUTCOMES: At the end of this session you will

    • Have a general understanding of the role of different parts of the brain in ‘normal’ movement as a way to approach ‘unusual’ movement
    • Have a basic understanding of the most common neuro-motor disorders: Parkinson’s Disease, Multiple Sclerosis, Stroke, and Cerebral Palsy and specifically their effect on movement
    • Understand general the benefits of exercise and have an idea of exercise guidelines for each of those conditions
    • Understand key concepts including ‘training the deficit’, ‘dignity of risk’, ‘temporarily able bodied’, and ‘meeting people where they are’
    • Be less afraid to have a go, and more willing and confident welcoming people with neuro-motor disorders into your service.

Movement That Matters - Part 1  (Stadium, AH Block)

    2 HOUR SESSION - PART 1

SESSION DESCRIPTION: This session will review human performance at the highest level and look to draw parallels with what the best athletes in the world consistently do regardless of their chosen field. Compare this to our current sedentary environment and what lessons can we take from the absolute pinnacle of human performance, and scale for our clients. We will also explore the concept of multi-planar movement and if there is a place for this in training programs and if so, where does it fit within that training plan.

LEARNING OUTCOMES: We will ground this session in a few key principles, some of these principles have garnered popularity in more recent times while others have been with us for centuries. What happens when we forgo ego and focus purely on quality of movement at a level appropriate for our client? Can we still provide them with some of what they want and some of what they need during their time with us? What are some quick and easy ways to see the movement capability of the person in front of us and how can we scale this based on the ability of the client in front of us?

This can become monotonous for both trainer and client b) The Trainer doesn't know how to market the bootcamp to get enough participants... It's therefore not worth it for the Trainer and they give up... In this presentation we'll address both these issues and show you how easy it is to overcome :)!

How to play with your client (and accidentally teach them)  (Stadium, AH Block)

SESSION DESCRIPTION: The concept of PLAY precedes man kind. Play is the #1 best tool to learn and discover how our body works and how it can better operate. When we are trying out a new movement pattern, we are playing. During this workshop, Dan will teach how Play can be implemented into warm ups, skill development and how physical riddles and learning new skills may even help to prevent the onset of Dementia, Parkinson's disease and Alzheimer’s.

Learn how to make your client competitive against themself for their own benefit. Understand how to apply playfulness to serious hard work and have your client wanting more physical riddles!
