If you asked a group of 100 exercise hopefuls to explain the term, ‘motivation to exercise’, I’m sure most of them would explain it pretty well. However if you asked the same group to actually motivate themselves to exercise, the outcome would be much different.
Far from the typical motivational approach where the professional does all of the work, MI aims to return responsibility to the client by enhancing self-efficacy and personal control for behaviour change. The use of an interactive, empathic listening style increases motivation and confidence, and allows clients to safely explore the discrepancy between personal goals and current health behaviours (a powerful way to develop long lasting intrinsic motivation).
In this interactive workshop we will first explore what MI is, and, how it works, before examining the elements that are of particular relevance to fitness professionals. Part of this discussion will be around the practical use of MI within typical environments, e.g. how to use MI when the focus regularly shifts between conversation/exercise execution/conversation etc.
From here we will explore several motivational techniques which will be examined and applied to real situations and scenarios that occur within the industry. Participants will be encouraged to identify some of the more common motivational problems they face day to day, and will get an opportunity to practice the skills and techniques learnt to achieve better outcomes for clients.
Angela has packaged the best of her yearly mentoring program into this day workshop.
Learn some of the secrets to success of some of the worlds best trainers Angela has worked with.
If it is time for you to uncover your genius, connect to your purpose, step up and share your gifts with the world then this workshop is for you.
As trainers and health professionals we are in a privileged position to positively impact the lives of so many people. I see so many who are doing great things but have yet to realise their potential and what they are truly capable of. But boy when they do, it’s exciting!
This program is ideally suited to people with a growth mindset who are passionate about making a difference. It is for those wanting to live a purposeful life personally and professionally.
In this workshop we will
In this event Carl will draw on biological anthropological research as well as his in depth interviews with experts in many areas to explore what we know about our ancestors in terms of how we are physiologically wired to eat, move and live.
From here we will go over a lifestyle screening protocol as well as primal movement screening. This will give us a snapshot of where your client is at that moment in time.
Finally we will cover application and how we can prioritise what is the best starting point. We will then explore tools that we can apply to correct identified lifestyle factors - from movement and nutrition all the way to social and daily operating rhythms.
This will be fun and interactive with many tools you can apply straight away to your own life and your clients.
LEARNING OUTCOMES:

You could sit back and rubbish them… But to be honest you’d be just like the out of shape client who doesn’t do anything to get in shape and then bags out everyone else who is actually trying…
OR
You could do something about it…

A must for every trainer wanting to eliminate non-responders from their client results. Practice on real clients at the end of the workshop.
As females start to step up and engage in higher intensity resistance training and cardiovascular conditioning, it is also becoming apparent how important, we as trainers and coaches, understand our clients personal needs and level of fitness, to ensure they are training effectively and will achieve their results in an efficient time frame. Accurate lifestyle assessments and performance measurements are the initial starting point to ensure you are really applying the “Personal” component into Personal Training. Join Katrina as she discusses the major concepts of hormonal response to training females and how important it is to program effectively to enhance production and results. She will also discuss the effects of common women's health concerns such as endometriosis, PCOS and menopause, and how regular exercise can minimise the severity of these. Leave this session with information you can implement immediately with your female clients to enhance their overall results.
Here's another full day workshop from Fitex favourite JP, with thought provoking content, enjoyable practical engagement and strategies you can instantly apply in your business, and your life, the very next day.
JP wants to share some stunning information about the effects of exercise on the brain and emotions, but equally how our mental or emotional worlds influence our physical outcomes:
Given this fact, having an understanding of what JP calls the 3 human dimensions is incredibly useful. However, the outcome JP passionately wants for all attendees, is to actively engage and coach the whole human. Create positive change mentally, emotionally and physically. Create movement sessions that may be geared towards everything that is familiar to you (strength, cardio, mobility, play), but that tick all boxes of the human being. As the saying goes, you can't have motion, without e-motion.
ou'll leave with great information, but you'll know how to apply it in your sessions AND will have practised your new skills before the day is done.
Finally, we shouldn't forget the hallmark of any JP experience: an inclusive, encouraging, friendly, supportive and fun environment that will have you inspired for the life changing work that you do.
During this all-new course, we will delve into some of the basics of Nero Linguistic Programming to help you create rapport and be aware of subtle signals that let you know when you're actually in 'rapport' with someone. We will look at just how important the language around goal setting is and how you can 'tweak' the wording of a goal to make it more powerful. We will discover what happens at the unconscious level when information is taken in and how we and our client's filter information, and, thus deem it safe or a threat. we will then dive into how to change the words we use and give you applicable language changes to improve client outcomes.

If you are thinking of working with the 'neuros' this presentation is a must.
Exercise Prescription
In this seminar Carl will draw on his in depth interviews with movement experts as well as biological anthropological and ancestral research to explore how we are designed to move as human beings.

Nutrition & Weightloss

Strength & Conditioning
The term "functional training" is a catch phrase you'll hear at any fitness conference and any gym chain in the world. Functional training is not standing on one foot on a bosu ball swinging a kettle bell overhead in all planes of motion. Learn how to develop programmes and choose exercises that are specific and functional for your clients.
If you asked a group of 100 exercise hopefuls to explain the term, 'motivation to exercise', I'm sure most of them would explain it pretty well. However if you asked the same group to actually motivate themselves to exercise, the outcome would be much different.
So why is it, that even though the whole group wanted to exercise, only a minority would manage to start and stick with it? While the answer to this and other similar questions are complex, one thing we do know, is that Motivational Interviewing (MI) is one method fitness professionals can use to help clients bridge the gap between knowing and doing.
In this talk we will first explore what MI is, and, how it can boost your client's motivation to make health related changes, and then learn about several key MI strategies and techniques that you can use with clients to enhance change talk. From here we will explore a selection of techniques that can be used to effectively respond to, and reframe negative or self-defeating client statements.
You know it too! You probably see 'Trainers' that aren't half the Trainer you are BUT they have more clients than you and are more successful than you. Just because they know how to post a good selfie on Instagram
You could sit back and rubbish them! But to be honest you'd be just like the out of shape client who doesn't do anything to get in shape and then bags out everyone else who is actually trying.
You could do something about it.

This session is designed to provide valuable insight to the gym owner, personal trainer or studio owner.

You and your business might be catching these people at a time when they are highly motivated and ready to make a significant change in their lives. In this session, learn from Addiction Coach, Zay Canters, about how you can understand more about your clients who may be addicted to alcohol or other substances.

It is said that you can't have motion without emotion. But what are the mechanics of this? How can exercise change our emotional state? How does our emotional state dictate performance? What is going on in our brains and bodies when this happens? Is it possible to actively influence these elements to bring about the best outcomes for your clients?
JP wants to answer some of these questions using fascinating research and practical experience to explain (some of) how it all works and more importantly, how you can use this information in your work to improve your client outcomes. You'll come away with new vocabulary, like 'interoception' and a new understanding of humanity in general!
Bootcamp is such a fun way for clients to train and it can also be quite profitable for the Trainer... If done properly... Unfortunately it is often not done properly, the common problems faced
a) The Trainer doesn't have a wide array of Bootcamp Workouts that work well with groups so they over do the ""circuit"" and "tabata" and "boxing" workout formats. This can become monotonous for the both the trainer and client
b) The Trainer doesn't know how to market the Bootcamp to get enough participants... It's therefore not worth it for the Trainer and they give up...
In this presentation we'll address both these issues and show you how easy it is to overcome :)!
Participants will learn

In sports such combat sports, equestrian, and even NFL, athletes are required to weigh to fit a desired weight class for their designated category, or position. Pilates is all about lengthening and strengthening the body while improving posture and alignment. This session is aimed at the most misunderstand cohort of people personal trainers work with, yet they are the ones who most need our help and guidance - the bigger client. Obesity is now a global epidemic, with New Zealand rating in the top 3 of the most obese countries worldwide. Something needs to change, as what we are currently prescribing is not working. It is not always as simple as telling someone to eat less and move more. Extreme obesity through to successful, long term weight loss, and training the bigger client requires a multi-faceted approach with 3 major considerations. This session will give you the tools for training the bigger client, and help you to give your client their life back.
You will also learn about Bariatric (weight loss) surgery - what it is, how it works, who has it and why, and the role it plays in fighting obesity. You will learn why Bariatric surgeries fail and what your role as a health and exercise professional working with a bariatric client involves.
We know that regular exercise and a nourished body are key to us living a happy life through to our older years. We have more research and information than ever on conditions such as Alzheimers Disease, Dementia, Parkinsons Disease and a range of neurodegenerative diseases yet the number of people with these conditions is projected to increase enormously over the next 20 years. Why is exercise not changing this? What other factors do we need to consider? In most cases people die with these diseases not from them, making their older years incredibly hard for the individual and their families. In this session we will explore these conditions and the uncovered types of exercise that we are not doing that could really make a difference to improve the quality of life for many aging individuals and anyone planning to grow old into the future!

In Dr Bill Sukala's nearly 30 year career in the health field, he's seen virtually every fad diet, ab blaster, and fat burner pill come and go...only to be resurrected with a new marketing spin. In this brutally honest take-no-prisoners talk, Bill exposes the underbelly of the health industry and calls bullsh*t on the gimmicks that give the fitness industry a bad name.
In this session you will:
The late, great Mel Siff once wrote; "Not everyone can create a tough program that produces progress without unnecessary pain." A simple but profound statement that requires unpacking. What is the definition of a tough program? What does the average person define as progress? And how can we manage our client's exposure to unnecessary pain? We will explore all this and more in a session designed to provoke thought, challenge some of your current beliefs and encourage discussion of the different ways we can plan for success with our clients.
Identify strategies to ensure compliance with your training programs as the best-laid plan that lies unutilised becomes irrelevant very quickly. Self Employed | Self Care is an opportunity for those of you who are aiming to be, or who currently are self-employed to focus on the most important part of your business - YOU!
Having been self-employed for the last 3 years, I have made every mistake in the book. Through my education I was fully prepared with knowledge of how to be an amazing Personal Trainer, but I didn't prepare myself on the demands of being self-employed.
When you are your own boss, accountant, marketer, administrator etc, it is hard to find a work life balance. If you're passionate, driven and have a strong work ethic then it's likely you'll end up time-poor, exhausted, over-committed, under-delivering and eventually burnt-out.
Self Employed | Self Care is an opportunity to learn 1st hand the do's and don'ts of becoming self-employed and managing your self-care through the exciting but petrifying journey of being an entrepreneur.
The aim is for you to learn from my mistakes - rather than having to make them yourself, while also gaining insight, and ability of what you're about to or currently facing. It's never too early to prepare and it's never too late to prioritise. Before you can look after your clients, you have to look after yourself - which is why I'll be helping you gain the skills and tools to monitor, maintain and manage self-care.
I have adapted the traditional method of Pilates from its roots by Joseph Pilates and kept my teaching style very simple but concentrated. With a focus on control, precision and breath I am aiming to gently and safely reconnect people to their own power.
In the thirty years, I have spent attuning my mind and body through many styles of movement; it has become a recent discovery of mine that the way I now look at and treat movement is lacking in the field of health and fitness. Stillness has become the root of my movement philosophy; I encourage clients at my Yoga and Pilates studio to focus on the strength that they can tap into from the stillness within their bodies.

In this session, Katrina will break down the science behind mental health conditions and how we, as health and fitness professionals can program efficiently to encourage the use of exercise as a positive inclusion for individual hormonal and chemical balance and incorporate exercise as the new remedy.

So, your client has made an effort to turn up to the gym and pay you for a session. Does that mean they're motivated to change? While they could be, the answer is probably more complicated that. Motivation like many things in life fluctuates. Therefore, as fitness professionals, we too need to adjust our approach to motivating clients if we are to help them succeed over time.
In this talk we will look at a unique model of change (the Exercise Motivation Change Cycle), which explores the many and varied motivational positions your clients will inevitably find themselves occupying. We will cover a range of basic techniques that can be used to build an initial impetus to change, and then several more advanced techniques that can be used to assist clients to strengthen and maintain their motivation over time.
At the end of the talk there will be a Q&A session where you can problem solve your most common motivational challenges, and more importantly learn about exactly what you can do to meet them head on. In the end you will leave better equipped to help people build, strengthen and maintain their motivation to change, and ultimately get to where they want to be.

In Part 2, youÕll be learning about how you can assist your clients to overcome their addiction, commit to their healthy lifestyle and ultimately achieve their goals.
We love our industry. We all believe strongly that exercise is great for us. And mostly it is. Movement is a gift. Eating healthily and exercising regularly are cornerstones of the wellbeing industry.
However, there is an alarming rise in the number of people suffering with orthorexia (the term for a condition that includes symptoms of obsessive behaviour in pursuit of a healthy diet), compulsive over-exercising and for women, associated problems of amenorrhea (missing periods).
Where are our responsibilities as health and fitness professionals? Suddenly the line between physical health and mental health gets a bit blurry.
This session will be co-presented and we will both share personal experiences of where we have been negatively affected by our love of exercise. We have one body that needs to last us a long and well-lived lifetime, and as health and fitness professionals we have a responsibility to ensure that we are helping our clients live their best, healthiest lives.

The 'power-bodybuilder' amalgamates the perfect ideal of strength and aesthetics, yet ironically emphasizes the rift between strength-training and training for looks.
Gone were the classic physiques, like Arnold and Franco, where strength was necessary for muscular development. In fact, staple training movements during bodybuilding's golden era, such as deadlifts, rows and squats are too, becoming increasingly neglected, and replaced by isolated machine work.
This shift in training ideology begs the question: ÒIf an ideal physique can be developed without heavy training, why the need to return to our strength roots?Ó
This lecture explores why strength-training is critical for aesthetics.

Take the Classical Pilates Method and add that with the Swiss Ball and you have "Two The Max".
Two principles Pilates and Swiss Ball training blended together for one dynamic, controlled, strong core training practice.
My passion for exercise and movement began in my early childhood where dance classes taught me the importance of choreography, a skill which inspired my career as an aerobics teacher in my later life. It was through the mindful and gentle practice of Pilates where I really began to locate my inner-strength. After years of teaching and managing Yoga & Pilates within larger industries, I began to recognize what was missing from the fitness industry and how it treated movement.
My most recent achievement focuses on the essence of movement by incorporating the Swiss Ball (which is often used as a tool for rehabilitation and physical therapy) into my Pilates practice.
Find out how you can use the Swiss Ball more in your business/classes. Rather than the Swiss Ball collecting dust in the corner of the gym/studio let's get on the Ball."

One of the biggest controversy in about fitness and nutrition revolves around the notion of supplementation. Should we advocate it or should nutrition be solely consumed from whole foods? Yet, do supplements have a place in creating an optimal physique?
