Forensic Interviewing Block I: Practical Application of the Semi-Structured Narrative Process

Summary

This introductory forensic interviewer training spans three (3) days and is the first of three (3) components that comprise CACTX’s Forensic Interviewing Core Curriculum. Block I is specifically designed for interviewers who will be conducting forensic interviews as part of a multidisciplinary team in a children's advocacy center setting.

Participants will gain the knowledge and tools needed to begin conducting interviews with children of alleged abuse. The curriculum introduces the practice of forensic interviewing and the research behind why the Semi-Structured Narrative Process (SSNP) approach is most effective for child abuse cases and walks through each step of the interview process including disclosure, questioning techniques and linguistics, and stages of the SSNP.

Format: This highly interactive program includes lecture and discussion, observation of actual interviews, the study of current literature and research articles, and an experiential mock interview practicum conducted under the supervision of a tenured interviewer.*

*Please note this training will cover how to conduct forensic interviews in English; it will not provide a process for conducting interviews in other languages.

Prerequisites: Current employment with or contractor of a local children’s advocacy center in the state of Texas.

Approval Process: Registering for this training offering does not guarantee acceptance.* Applicants will be notified of their final registration status at a minimum of three (3) weeks prior to the start of the training.

*Offering quality, professional training in a classroom environment is a key priority for our organization. We feel this format is the most conducive to effective learning as it allows for small group activities, one-on-one coaching, and ample opportunity for Q&A. However, given the inherent size of classroom training, we have to carefully manage the registration process. Our goal is to ensure that participants have timely access to the training offerings they are in need of in order to do their important jobs effectively. In reviewing registrations, our process is to assess both the registrant CAC’s needs as well as the registrant’s completion of course prerequisites.

Auditors: Supervisors of forensic interviewers who wish to obtain a better understanding of the interviewer role and tenured interviewers who have previously completed Block I training and wish to adapt their current interview procedures or are seeking to sharpen their skills may audit this training. Auditors are given the opportunity to participate in all coursework but may only observe the mock interviews in order to give new interviewers ample time to practice the SSNP approach.
