About the Conference

Online registration is now closed.

If you haven't already registered, HAC will accept onsite registrations November  29 - December 2.  Please allow extra time for staff to process your registration and prepare your materials.

The biennial HAC Rural Housing Conference brings together stakeholders in the field of rural affordable housing from local nonprofits, federal agencies, Congress, state and local governments, and other industry leaders for two-and-a-half days of training, discussion and networking.

The Conference features over 40 workshops where participants will learn best practices for rural housing development, organizational management and resource development, as well as innovative approaches to housing and community development. The event also offers a pre-Conference day packed with gatherings for coalitions, associations, and working groups.

For rural nonprofits, the Conference provides an excellent opportunity to network and improve their connection to federal agencies and national nonprofit organizations. For many attendees this conference represents their sole opportunity during the year to connect with these important policy makers and experts.

Building Rural Communities

The 2016 Conference theme, Building Rural Communities, underscores the broad impact of improved housing. The Conference theme explicitly recognizes that providing decent, affordable rural housing is a thread in the larger local and regional community fabric, that communities are more likely to be vibrant when resources are interwoven to meet the needs of its residents. In our continued efforts to address housing and community challenges across rural America, one constant remains – the quest to Build Rural Communities so that they are healthy, sustainable and vibrant places to live, work and stay.  HAC’s 2016 Rural Housing Conference will continue building upon our vision and expand upon our past accomplishments.

About HAC

HAC Logo

The Housing Assistance Council (HAC) has been helping local organizations build affordable homes in rural America since 1971. HAC assists in the development of both single- and multi-family homes and promotes homeownership for working low-income rural families through a self-help, "sweat equity" construction method by emphasizing local solutions, empowerment of the poor, reduced dependence, and self-help strategies. HAC offers services to public, nonprofit, and private organizations throughout the rural United States and maintains a special focus on high-need groups and regions, such as: Indian country, the Mississippi Delta, farmworkers, the Southwest border colonias, and Appalachia.

HAC is a nonprofit corporation located in Washington, DC with regional offices in Georgia, Missouri, New Mexico and California.

The mission of the Housing Assistance Council is to improve housing conditions for the rural poor, with an emphasis on the poorest of the poor in the most rural places.
