This training is designed to review the driving habits and conduct of personnel operating emergency vehicles, and to increase driver awareness using discussion of actual situations in a classroom environment. Following 3 hours of classroom instruction, students will participate in 3 hours of hands-on exercises from the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) Standard 1002. These will consist of low speed exercises to test the driver's skill in maneuvering a vehicle through close clearances and test knowledge of the many factors that can affect control of a vehicle. Hands-On Vehicle Operations for Fire and EMS increases awareness of exposures so that personnel operate and arrive at scenes safely. Participating departments will be required to bring at least one apparatus of their choice for their drivers to use during the hands-on portion of training. Goals and Objectives - Hands-On Vehicle Operations for Fire and EMS helps to prevent accidents and injuries by increasing awareness of employee roles during vehicle operations and improving decision-making skills.
