The health professional is often confronted with painful conditions where diagnosis is crucial for the proper management, thus avoiding procedures that not only do not solve the chief complaint, but  also can complicate the clinical picture. A proper training in understanding and treating pain will be  of significant value for health professionals. The objective of this hands-on course is to provide the participants of the Mini-Residency in orofacial pain the opportunity to acquire the required skills to properly diagnose and treat orofacial pain cases of moderate complexity.

This hands-on course will help the participants to master necessary skills to properly examine a patient with an Orofacial Pain complain, including:

  • Head and neck examination: TMJ and muscle palpation, cranial nerve examination, the use of otoscope, functional tests of the orofacial region
  • TMJ treatment: Joint mobilization, spray & stretch, trigger points, joint injection, splints
  • Neuropathic evaluation and treatment: neuronal deficit maps, anesthetic challenge test, use of topicals, neurosensory stents
  • Sleep medicine: mandibular advancement appliances

The participants will discuss three clinical cases (standardized patients), generating a differential diagnosis and treatment plan

With the participation of experts on pain management, this session will discuss the different alternatives for chronic orofacial pain conditions, and stress the importance of an interdisciplinary team approach.
