Health Communicators SIG: Junk the jargon! Minimize medical language for better health care writing

Summary

Event description:

Join us for a lively roundtable discussion on tips and tricks for translating technical and medical language into readable copy. Whether educating patients or making news pitches, the ability to translate complex medical information into exciting stories and simple instructions is a critical skill to get your organization's work noticed. If possible, please bring a few examples of your own plain language projects, issues or solutions to share with the group.

We will discuss:

  • how to have practical conversations with clinical staff about the importance of reaching lay audiences with plain language
  • motivations people may have for keeping jargon in their communications and how to work with them when consulting
  • challenges and successes we've had in educating others about jargon
  • writing tools and resources to improve your copy readability and reading level

About this SIG:

Our IABC/BC Health SIG offers an informal, confidential and supportive venue to receive feedback and exchange ideas on day-to-day challenges in health communications. We strive to be inclusive — all are welcome to attend from students to senior practitioners and those looking for a career change into health communications. No problem is too small or too big to warrant input and discussion. We strive to keep sessions focused, constructive and relevant.

Topics we might tackle include: working with health professionals, communications and fundraising, communicating change, working with the Ministry of Health, keeping health story telling fresh, explaining research communications, public health campaigns, public and patient voice, access to e-tools in health settings and transition to digital communications.
