Bun B

Bernard Freeman, better known by his stage name Bun B is an American rapper, songwriter and philanthropist who rose to fame in the influential rap duo UGK. Hailing from Port Arthur, TX, UGK signed with Jive Records and with 1992's LP Too Hard to Swallow began a series of Southern compositions that would go on to produce some of the industry’s most influential and classic tracks. Bun B has also been featured on albums with several other notable artists. His most notable guest appearances were on the Jay- Z hit single “Big Pimpin” and Beyonce’s chart-topper “Check On It.” After several increasingly successful albums as a duo Bun B embarked on a solo career in 2005. The rapper and songwriter’s debut album, Trill, opened at #6 on the Billboard Hot 200, and also peaked at #1 on Billboard's Top R&B/Hip-hop Album chart and was certified gold for selling over 500,000 copies. Bun B and UGK group mate, Pimp C reunited once more in 2007 to release the self-titled double album Underground Kingz. The album debuted #1 on the Billboard 200 in its first week. Tragedy struck in early 2008 when Pimp C died suddenly, leaving Bun B to return to a solo career. His second solo album, II Trill, arrived that same year. In 2009 he would release another chart-topper, UGK’s final album with Jive Records, entitled UGK 4 Life. The album debuted at #5 on the Billboard Hot 200 and #1 on Billboard’s Top R&B/Hip-hop Album chart, proving the groups staying power. Bun B has been recognized, nominated and presented with several notable awards in the entertainment industry. In 2001 UGK was nominated for their first Grammy Award for Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group for Jay-Z’s “Big Pimpin.” In 2006 Bun B won an ASCAP Award for Top R&B/Hip Hop Song for his writing and performance on the single “Give Me That.” In 2007 UGK won the BET Hip Hop Award for Video of the Year for “Int’l Players Anthem” the eloquent, highly notarized collaboration with Outkast. In 2008 the duo won two more BET Award’s for Video of the Year and Best Group. In 2007, UGK earned another Grammy nomination for Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group for “Int’l Player’s Anthem.” Bun B also holds an MTV Music Award for Best R&B Video for Beyonce’s “Check On It” featuring himself and Slim Thug.

Bun B's third solo album Trill. O.G dropped in August 2010. The record has received great critical acclaim. In particular, the record received a 5 mics rating in The Source magazine's August 2010 issue, as well as an XL rating in national hip hop publication XXL. The album features guest appearances by some of the most acclaimed current hip hop artists, including Drake, Gucci Mane, Young Jeezy, T-Paine, and more. Bun has been featured on The Late Night Show with Jimmy Fallon, MTV's Sucker Free and BET "106 & Park.'  Music from the new album, videos, shows footage and interviews have been a recurrent feature on most entertainment websites throughout the year. He was nominated Most Interesting Urban Artists on Twitter by MTV.com.

Collectively as a member of the duo UGK and as a solo artist Bun B has sold almost 4 million albums to date; he has proven himself to be one of the entertainment industry’s most relevant, successful artist, songwriter’s and trend setters. In 2011, Bun partnered up with Dr. Anthony B. Pinn, UGK fan and head of Rice's H.E.R.E. community-outreach program, to teach "Religious Studies 331: Religion and Hip-Hop Culture. The course turned out to be a very successful initiative that brought a lot of media attention to the university. The course will resume at Rice in the Fall of 2013. Meanwhile, Bun has continued to mentor and champion up and coming hip hop artists all over the county and maintains his position as one of the most regarded hip hop luminaires. Bun is currently working on a hip hop coloring book along with Houston based writer Shea Serrano. The book will be published in the Fall by Abrams Books.
